Volunteers across Las Vegas unite through meaningful community action
For the first time, Southern Nevada is joining Rotary International’s growing global movement known as the EPIC Day of Service, bringing local volunteers together to create meaningful impact through hands-on service.
Led by the Rotary Club of Las Vegas Red Rock, this year’s effort connects Las Vegas to a worldwide initiative spanning seven countries, more than 1,200 Rotary clubs, 36,000 volunteers, and over 1,200 service projects focused on strengthening communities through action.
“Food scarcity is very real here in Southern Nevada.”
The Las Vegas project will focus on assembling snack kits and feminine hygiene kits for individuals and families in need. Volunteers will gather at the Ahern Hotel on May 16 to package essential supplies including soup, granola bars, oatmeal packets, fruit snacks, juice, feminine hygiene products, wipes, and other care items.
EPIC Day of Service Brings Hands-On Support to Southern Nevada
According to club members Rebecca Fritz and Mian Acoba, the project was intentionally designed to address needs that are often overlooked.
“Food scarcity is very real here in Southern Nevada,” Rebecca explained during a recent television interview. “Access to feminine hygiene products can directly affect people’s confidence, as well as their health and even their ability to attend school or work.”
The club hopes the project provides more than supplies.
“We’re not just providing supplies. We’re providing and supporting dignity and some stability.”
“We’re not just providing supplies,” Rebecca shared. “We’re providing and supporting dignity and some stability.”
The event also reflects a larger goal of helping people discover that service can be approachable, meaningful, and even fun.
Rotary Members Hope Volunteers Discover the Joy of Service
“We hope the volunteers learn that it is fun to volunteer,” Rebecca said. “You do not need to have a lot of money or have a lot of free time in order to make an impact in the world.”
That spirit of connection and belonging is one of the things that drew Mian to Rotary after relocating from Chicago to Las Vegas last year.
“It feels really, really good to do service within our communities and with our neighbors.”
“I was looking for some friends and I stumbled upon Rotary,” Mian shared. “Some of the people that I’m closest to here now in Vegas are these guys. It feels really, really good to do service within our communities and with our neighbors.”
The Rotary Club of Las Vegas Red Rock describes itself as slightly nontraditional, with members ranging in age from their twenties to their sixties and a strong emphasis on hands-on service projects. Members regularly participate in projects ranging from environmental cleanups and assembling baby kits to building homes in Mexico and supporting local shelters.
For Rebecca, who is celebrating her 11th anniversary in Rotary this year, service has become deeply personal.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” she said, referencing a quote often attributed to Gandhi. “I’ve learned so much, I’ve met some amazing people, and I’ve learned that everyone can truly make a difference.”
Las Vegas Volunteers Join a Growing Global Movement
As EPIC Day of Service continues to expand globally, the Las Vegas effort serves as a reminder that even small acts of service can create lasting impact, both for the people receiving help and for the volunteers themselves.
